MMCDC established a $5 million rural New Markets Tax Credit fund to finance two nonprofit agencies benefiting youth and families. Lakes Crisis and Resource Center constructed a 17,250-square-foot, 27-bed shelter and office for their family-focused programs. Across town, the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural
Center added an indoor playground, called The Backyard, and a baseball-themed gym alongside an interactive teen fitness center. In this community of just 8,569 people, the community and cultural center has the capacity to serve 1,700 people in its theater, ballroom, senior center, fitness and aquatics center, and remaining areas.
