The closure of the only grocery in Twin Valley, Minn., created an inconvenience for local residents. But Megan Ostgarden saw an opportunity, and a loan from MMCDC helped her to reopen the store.
“I always said if it came for sale I would try to buy it. My mom worked here when I was a kid until she got breast cancer. She worked here until they told her she couldn’t work anymore.” — Megan Ostgarden, Hometown Grocery and Goods owner
Now Megan applies that same work ethic to running the store, where a plaque memorializes her mother’s service to family and community. Dedicated staff are still key to the store’s success.
Hometown Grocery offers full service, with meat and produce, a deli, shelf-stable foods, floral and balloon décor, and basic home supplies, all at a visible location with ample parking. As a first-time grocery owner, Megan continues to update her operation as other downtown retailers close and open. This includes using a Northern Minnesota supplier that specializes in family run groceries as well as offering a display area to local vendors.
