When impassioned community members came together in 2016 to form a food co-op, MMCDC responded with technical assistance, flexible financing and referrals.

“MMCDC’s mission and our mission overlap, and I think that’s important,” MANNA Treasurer Ryan Pesch said. “…We have a lot of things going in the right direction, but we certainly need that flexibility.”

MANNA offers a combination of fresh, organic and healthy food and household products, and continues to grow its selection and services. These include deli items, pre-packaged meals, and educational offerings. Plans call for a seasonal outdoor stand as well.

As a vegetable grower himself, Pesch sees the co-op as an investment in a local economy of small producers who are delivering their goods one pick-up load at a time.

“We’re giving folks another outlet for sales… an outlet that has a higher profile than direct marketing,” added Pesch.

Items produced, processed or packaged regionally include eggs, coffee, maple syrup, wild rice, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, soaps and lotions, bread, chocolate bars, and more. Members receive discounts, but membership is not required.

When the opportunity of a co-op in Detroit Lakes came to light it was an easy decision to support it. We love buying local foods from farmers and crafters. On many of our adventures we search out co-ops and love the unique, fresh local options they provide. We are excited to see it evolve and grow in our community. — Nicole Schmitz, MANNA member
